What Causes Skin Sensitivity?
LAPO Skin Science
Skin sensitivity arises when the skin barrier is compromised, making it more reactive to environmental and topical stressors. This can lead to redness, irritation, dryness, and discomfort. Common causes include:
1. Overuse of Skincare Products – Layering too many actives or complex routines can overwhelm the skin, leading to increased reactivity.
2. Harsh Cleansing Practices – Strong surfactants and excessive scrubbing can strip away essential lipids, weakening the skin’s natural defense.
3. Prolonged Hydration from Masks – Overusing facial masks can disrupt the skin’s structure, leading to barrier dysfunction and hydration dermatitis.
4. Excessive Exfoliation – Frequent use of acids, peel-off masks, or exfoliating treatments can cause micro-damage and heightened sensitivity.
5. Irritating Ingredients – High concentrations of glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and retinoids may trigger irritation without proper skin preparation.
6. Aesthetic & Medical Treatments – Procedures like laser therapy temporarily compromise the barrier; without proper post-care, sensitivity can persist.
